Now for the good news. You're entitled to discounts and concessionary fares on everything from train travel to a night out at the theatre.


Transport


London Transport - 50% off pay-as-you-go rates on Oyster cards - requires a New Deal photocard - see Transport for London

National Rail - 50% off standard fares - requires a New Deal photocard - see www.nationalrail.co.uk


Entertainment

Theatres often give a discount though you'll need to check locally (e.g. the Birmingham Hippdrome offers £3 off per ticket)

Cinemas tend not to offer a discount but prices are lower during the day (e.g. £7.10 for a daytime screening compared to £9.60 in the evening in London). Some discounts on membership are available (e.g. Curzon Cinemas - £30 membership, normally £40 and British Film Institute - membership for £20, normally £35)


Sport and leisure

Sports and leisure centres - council owned leisure centres typically offer concessionary rates to Job Seekers -  check with your local leisure centre

Gyms - most gyms offer an off-peak membership rate. Though it's not exclusive to the unemployed, if you're free during the daytime you can take advantage of it


Museums and galleries

Most musems and galleries offer a discount to the unemployed e.g.:

British Museum - small discount on ticketed exhibitions for those collecting Job Seekers' allowance / unemployed (e.g. £2 off a £12 ticket) - varies by exhibition

Tate Modern and Tate Britain - small discount on ticketed exhibitions for Job Seekers (e.g. £1.90 off a £12.20 ticket) - varies by exhibition
