What the budget means for you

Today's jobless figures were terrible, but what will the government do about it? We've been listening to today's budget and here's what it means for you:

Guarantee for the under 25s - the Chancellor has guaranteed that everyone under 25 who has been out of work for more than 12 months will be given a job or a training place. The government is working with employers to create 250,000 new jobs and traineeships in sectors with strong demand. £260m of new money will be set aside for this measure.

More money for JobCentre Plus - the government will provide an additional £1.7bn of funding for JobCentre Plus and the New Deal.  So, in theory your Job Centre will be better able to keep up with the increased demand.

Continued help with keeping your home - if you have a mortgage then you will benefit from an extension of the mortgage interest scheme which will maintain a higher level of support for a further 6 months. The intention is to help you keep your home while homeowners look for a new job.

Increase in statutory redundancy pay - if you are made redundant then the cap on the statutory redundancy pay (the one week's pay for each year worked) will be increased from £350 to £380. This is a very minor change to a fundamentally unfair system.
